NORTHERN WHITE CEDAR ACOUSTIC FENCING
The purpose
of an acoustic fence is to provide a comfortable outdoor living
environment to individuals adjacent to a noise source area. Specific
Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE) requirements for sound
barriers include a minimum surface density of 20 kg/m2, a designed
and constructed fence with no cracks or gaps, and only localized
gaps under the fence to allow for drainage.
Trans Canada
Wood Products Ltd. has introduced an acoustic fence made of NORTHERN
WHITE CEDAR. To ensure this new species would perform to MOE surface
density standards, Trans Canada Wood Products retained the services
of SS Wilson Associates to review some aspects related to the acoustic
properties of Northern White Cedar.
Briefly, the
test results show that a 21/4" infill board section will provide
the required MOE surface density of 20kg/m2.
Northern White
Cedar is found in most eastern provinces and has a light brown heartwood
and a sapwood that is nearly white. The texture is fine and even,
the grain is usually straight, and the growth rings are not prominent.
The wood has a pleasant aromatic odour and weathers to a silvery
sheen with inconspicuous checks. A book titled "Canadian Woods,
Their Properties and Uses" states that Northern White Cedar
has superior decay resistance and is one of the most durable species
in Canada. Other references confirm this natural durability and
resistance to decay.
A technical report published by Forintek Canada's Eastern Forest
Products Laboratory titled "Strength and Related Properties
of Woods Grown in Canada" indicates that Northern White Cedar
has a total volumetric shrinkage of 6.4%. This is over 15% less
shrinkage than a comparable species, Western Red Cedar. In a book
titled "Limit States Design of Wood Structures" authored
by F.J. Keenan, it suggests that radial checking is expected in
species with:
1. high specific
gravity;
2. high ratio of tangential to radial shrinkage (St/Sr);
3. low tensile strength perpendicular to the grain.
A review of
this data shows that Northern White Cedar and Western Red Cedar
have comparable properties, as follows:
| Species |
Specific
Gravity |
St/Sr |
Tension
perpendicular to the grain (p.s.i.) |
| Northern
White Cedar |
0.299 |
2.12 |
240 |
| Western
Red Cedar |
0.312 |
2.14 |
230 |
Based on these
properties as the main factors which will effect radial checking,
fence boards of Northern White Cedar and Western Red Cedar
will perform equally in exterior inservice conditions. In summary,
good dimensional stability combined with excellent natural decay
resistance will ensure that acoustic fences built of Northern White
Cedar will provide the durability required inservice.
Trans Canada
Wood Products sources the product locally which results in material
savings when compared to competing cedar products. In addition,
because material supply and processing are local, Trans Canada Wood
Products can ensure each order is delivered in a timely fashion,
minimizing any construction delays for our customers.

Northern
White Cedar
acoustic and privacy fencing
is a superior grade
wood product.
Used
for hundreds of years
in North America it has
proven a match for sun, rain and
even blowing sand.
Easily
recognized
as it weathers to a characteristic
soft pewter colour,
as opposed to the dark grey
or black of its red cedar
relatives, this light weight
wood is easily worked,
and very durable.
