Cut Tie Plugs
Railroad Tie
plugs are a product used by most North American Railroads prior
to the re-installation of a used railway tie. Railway ties are an
essential and costly item for the railways and re-use of this material
is a standard practice. Railway ties unsuitable for mainline use
are often "down-graded" for use in secondary or spur lines
were traffic, train speeds, and weights are lower. During the re-installation
of the old railway tie, tie plugs are set in the spike holes. The
tie plug ensures a firm and tight fit when the spike is re-introduced.
Tie plugs are
made of cedar or pressure treated hardwood. They are typically 5/8"
to 9/16" square and one "stick" contains four to
five plugs. They are packaged and sold in "bundles" of
100 sticks or 500 plugs.
Trans Canada
regularly produces "straight cut" tie plugs 36 to 45 inches
in length and standard American Railroad Engineering Association
(AREA) Standard "nothched" tie plugs. Trans Canada Wood
Products can custom cut to our customers specifications and order
size.
